New Wave Film metamorphoses into Drapery Design
or my love affair with L’Année Dernière a Marienbad
Alain Resnais created a masterpiece of mysticism in his 1960 film, newly released with documentation. The design enthusiast will find sumptuous Rococo locations to simplify and adapt. They suggested window draperies with wedge inserts, and since the film is black-and-white, the prototype is charcoal and off-white silk. |
Their fabrication relies on a traditional dressmaker technique popular in the 1960’s called the Godet, here shown in a red carpet gown from 2010, since a good gown is never out of style!

This beautiful timeless gown from L’Année Dernière a Marienbad triggered the image of a drapery design too.
Easier to translate into fabrication methods the boxed pleats were given a couture look by hand stitching them to tall pronged hooks.
To arrange the folds on the floor without puddles, and to simulate the beautiful fall of the gown in the film, rope cord was added to the hem. |

Our Meridian style has enjoyed a metamorphosis too. It began with the contrast band at the bottom. The band has lifted to window sill height and is made of silk satin, shown here, centre panel, in silver on oyster dupioni.
This goblet-pleated style is also available as a plain dupioni silk or satin or moiré (shown here as side panels). |
